Cyber Monday

This post has little to do with shopping, it’s just the catchy title the media dubbed today, so I thought I would use it.

Things are great around here. For the most part, Lula is sleeping like a champ- both overnight and during her naps.  Somehow, her sleep schedule seems to correlate to my happiness in life…I may need to work on that.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and sleeping until 7 every morning of Pa’s break from work was amazing.  We went to see family for Thanksgiving and had a great time.  Lula loved the attention and all of the Thanksgiving goodies!

Of course, all that sleep meant I was up at 4:30 this morning, but that’s okay.

We set up our outdoor Christmas decorations on Friday and I’ve started the holiday baking I do each year.

More on that later but in brief, I send tins of treats to many family members across the country and need to start early to ensure they get out to people on time.

What else have we been up to?

Lots of errand running lately; it seems like there is always something to do.

Additionally, the weather has been nice and on mild days, I really try to let Lula crawl around in the yard for awhile.

Running is still going well and I’m in the middle of another knitting project for the holidays.

I’m also in the middle of Gone Girl which has been an interesting read- not exactly a heart-warming book- but interesting nonetheless.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend (at least those of us in the US) and if you went shopping on Black Friday, you’re crazy.  Just kidding- we actually went to Wal-Mart on Friday afternoon for an extension cord and it wasn’t that bad- but you couldn’t pay me to wait in line with the masses.

I leave you with a twist on Movember.

Have a great week!

Lately

I made a somewhat sub-conscious choice to be a little less Twitter and blog-obsessed this past week…and it was mighty nice.  As Lula gets older, I find it harder to justify being online a lot when she’s awake.  When she isn’t awake, I have been enjoying reading a book or knitting.

What have we been up to?

Last Thursday, I got to meet the lovely Diana and her adorable boys.Lula and I had a lot of fun and it was very nice getting to know Diana in between chasing after our kids.

Saturday morning, Pa, Lula and I ran a benefit 5K and had a really nice time.It was quite cold and I loved how much it felt like fall.  I was able to keep up with Pa (who was kind enough to push the stroller) and we finished in 24:35!

We took a nice family run on Sunday morning… and Lula and I went to a nearby library book sale in the afternoon.  2 bucks to fill a bag with as many books as I wanted- and I actually found quite a few great items.  I am not ashamed to admit that I cleaned all of the books with a Clorox wipe when we got home.

I have rediscovered my love for knitting…this is all I can show of my latest project for now.

Other than the above, Lula and I are having a wonderful time just living day to day.  This weather puts me in such a great mood since there is so much more we can do, whenever we want to.  This includes going for stroller walks- in jeans and sweaters!

I want to savor fall and the upcoming holidays as much as I can…October-December truly is my favorite time of year.

Have a wonderful day!

Knitted Baby Bib

One thing I love about knitting is making handmade gifts for people.  Selfishly, it’s an easy way for me to give something original without going to too much trouble.  Sometimes it feels like it’s harder to shop for something thoughtful!

Since I’m at the age where friends and siblings are having babies, knitted baby items have become my standard gift.

I am a huge fan of making baby bibs. You can easily personalize them to fit the family you are making them for.

The pattern I used is from this book and I would highly recommend getting it if you are a knitter.  The patterns are simple, the authors are hilarious, and the photographs are wonderful.

Once you’ve chosen a basic pattern for a bib, the sky is the limit.  I found a great site with tons of free dishcloth patterns ranging from butterflies to a snowman to an airplane.  These are easy to work into a bib and, in my opinion, pretty thoughtful gifts.

I made this bib for my sister when her son was born.

she really likes skeletons

I also made her a pumpkin bib as her son was born in the fall but the pattern did not show up that well- it might have to do with the color.

My brother got these for his baby boy as they are dog lovers.

(Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the pattern for this one anymore)

I made this bib for a close friend of Pa’s whose son was born a few weeks ago.  Pa thought this picture was cheesy but the pansies are so pretty!

My lovely model.

Coordinating the bib color with the wrapping paper and “yarn bows” adds an extra special touch.

Here’s a peek at what I’m making Lula for her birthday.Happy knitting!

Knit your own bee stitch dishcloth

Who wants to have some fun!?

Knitting my own dishcloth?  Whoohoo!  Sign me up Kelly!  (I need this for the blog)If you are a knitter, you know that there are many more satisfying projects to invest in compared to a dishcloth.  Scarves, hats, sweaters and blankets are a few that come to mind.  And believe me, I love projects like those too.  In fact, I’ve got a blanket I’ve been working on for 5 years that isn’t done…oh wait.  Actually make that two blankets that I haven’t finished.

But…it’s May.  The blankets can wait. Once warm weather arrives, working on a knitting project that covers my lap and sometimes my legs is not enjoyable.  In fact, I get sweaty and if I want to sweat, I’m going to run, not knit.  That’s why I would rather focus on simple, quick projects in the summer- like a dishcloth.

Bee Stitch Dishcloth

This probably took me 3 hours to complete over the course of 24 hours- an easy project indeed.  You need to know knit stitch and knit 1 below for this project.  If you already know knit 1 below, you rock.  If you don’t, you rock too, but will have to do a little more work by watching the video I link to below.

You will need one skein of cotton yarn in the color of your choosing.  Peaches & Creme and Sugar & Cream are very inexpensive (less than $2) and you can find P & C at Wal-Mart and S & C at places like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.  Follow the instructions on the skein label for needle size (mine called for size 7 needles).

I cast on 35 stitches.

I then followed this pattern until I felt my dishcloth was long enough.  I repeated the four rows 12 times.

The pattern links to a helpful site for understanding knit 1 below but I like this video to remind me how to knit 1 below- the beauty of a video is that I can watch it again and again until I get it right!

I like this pattern because it really helps scrub my dishes. As you can see, mine is a rectangle. Making these dishcloths is almost instant gratification they come together so quickly.

I had to clean my sink before I was willing to take a photo of the dishcloth in its rightful spot so I guess blogging has become motivation to clean.I can’t tell you how much pleasure I’ve gotten from seeing a new dishcloth resting on the sink- it just brightens up the kitchen!

And…I can’t seem to stop myself.  I’ve already finished another one.

cast on 25 stitches for a square like this one

And am starting another…

Happy knitting!
