About Kelly

Wife and stay-at-home mom who loves to run, knit, and bake- often using sarcasm to express herself

Happy Friday!

Good morning!

I hope that everyone had a great week!  I can’t tell you how much better I am feeling lately and it’s so nice to be more involved with Twitter and momma bloggers again.  I feel like a real human being.  :)

It’s been a good week for us.

Lula had her 15 month check-up on Tuesday and Pa snapped off this photo of her while hanging out in the waiting room.

It makes me laugh every time I look at it.  Who is this kid and where did she learn how to pose like she’s ready for her senior picture?

It’s supposed to get close to 60 degrees today so I hope that Lula and I get in some good outdoor time- that’s the beauty of living in Kansas.  It may get cold, but it never stays that way for very long!

Here’s hoping you have a wonderful weekend and I’ve got a first trimester post coming up early next week.

The Ups and Downs of Postpartum Weight Loss

I gave birth to Lula in September of 2010 2011 (edited).  Those first few months were somewhat of a free for all.  I certainly wasn’t interested in “dieting” (survival was about all I was focused on) and I definitely had my share of sweets.

Between last winter and into spring, I saw my weight drop…slowly…and I was surprisingly okay with it not happening in a hurry.

Since the late summer, I have dropped quite a few pounds.  Shockingly, by the end of October, I weighed 12 pounds less than when I got pregnant with Lula in January of 2011.

Honestly, I haven’t been doing anything remarkably different than what I’ve been doing for the last few years. Eat healthy, run four days a week, etc.  Two differences?  I don’t sit the way I used to because I’m too busy doing stuff with Miss Lula (I am perfectly content to curl up on the couch for hours at a time reading and I’ve been known to finish a book in a day or two).

The other difference is that I do my best not to eat refined sugar (other than what I put in my morning coffee) until after dinner.  Last spring, I found myself eating a handful of chocolate chips after lunch, a few cookies here and there, etc.  I got tired of the unnecessary sugar in my body and I did not want Lula to see her main role model indulge that way.  I am not always perfect with this system but I do my best to stick to it.

Here I am in January of 2011!

sleep, nearly pregnant Kelly…sleep!

I apologize for the lack of a profile picture- I never took those before I got pregnant with Lula.

Fast-forward to Halloween 2012…

Lula was about to get into her costume, in case you were wondering.  Since I’ve lost this weight, I have been feeling great, I have so much energy, and Lula and I have been having a blast.

However, since early November, I’ve started feeling somewhat off, kind of tired, and I took this picture of myself a few days ago…same outfit, but…I look different.

Believe it or not, I haven’t gained more than a pound since the last photo was taken.  The difference between now and the end of October?

I’m actually three months pregnant!

Pa, Lula, and I are beyond excited and I hope to post more regularly now that the cat is out of the bag, and mainly because I am finally starting to feel better. Pregnancy update soon- have a great day!

A New Year

Happy (belated) New Year!

I hope that however you spent your holiday season, it was wonderful.

We travelled to Minnesota and South Dakota and it was quite a trip- pun intended.

In case you are wondering, a fifteen-month-old doesn’t sleep much better out of her environment than a nine-month-old.  We actually had to bring her into our bed a few nights, poor thing.  (That’s something I vowed never to do but hey, when it’s 2:45 AM and your baby is crying loudly and you are about to wake the entire household, something’s got to give)

In other news, we got home safely and I think we are all happy to be back in our own routine.

New Year’s Eve was a lovely day.  Sadly, Pa had to work but we ended up going for a run when he got home (all three of us) and it was a really fun, impromptu way to spend the late afternoon.

The night went by way too fast.  I had grand visions of staying up until eleven- or at the very least finishing our New Year’s Eve movie, Die Hard, but when 9:45 rolled around, it was lights out in our household.

Other than her sleep struggles, Lula has been doing pretty well. She is beginning to experience the joys of her molars coming in and boy, there have been some challenging days lately.  I thought she might have undergone a personality change until it became clear that she had some seriously swollen gums, poor baby.  We’ve got a topical ointment from our Dr. that I have used a few times…I’m not sure how well it works but it gives me some psychological comfort.

She is tentatively walking- crawling is still her fall back but I am guessing that any day, she will leave it behind.

In terms of napping- it really depends on the day.  I have pushed her naps back later and later until it seems like I’m not bringing her back to her crib until somewhere between 11:30-12.  I had been putting her down sooner but many times, she played and chatted and then whined for close to an hour before silence ensued.  After a few days of that, I couldn’t see a reason to keep a routine that wasn’t working and the later naptime usually works, although there have been days lately where she sleeps for an hour, tops.

Nursing?  We are still going strong at four times a day with each session lasting ten to fifteen minutes.  Morning, pre-naptime, afternoon, and bedtime.  She definitely milks the bedtime nursing session for as long as possible…in the words of Honest Toddler and those who came before him, did you see what I did there?

I hope that everyone has a super weekend and wow, MLK Jr. Day will be here before we know it!

Happy Holidays…

…while the merry bells keep ringing…

I love Christmas music- we’ve got a Roku which plays Pandora on the TV so on days like today,

snow and blustery winds

when Lula and I aren’t planning on going anywhere, the Pandora Christmas station rules.  From Mariah Carey to the Grinch to Charlie Brown, there is some good stuff on there.

This snowfall is the most we have gotten since the winter of 2010-2011 so I am pleased.  Just last week, this is what we were up to around here.I believe it got into the high 50s on that day- not bad!

I’ve been doing a lot of baking and assembling of tins.

ginger snaps

My siblings and I used to make sugar cookies for our grandparents when we were kids and over the years, the sugar cookies have evolved into me making tins of all kinds of treats for many of my relatives.  I really enjoy doing it and (I think) most people enjoy eating sweets so it all works out.  I don’t try to do low-fat anything for Christmas- it’s real ingredients, real butter, real sugar, etc. for these goodies.

Quick Lula update- she has been taking a few steps at a time, on her own, for the last few days!  So proud of her. It’s amazing to me how well she entertains herself these days.

She struggles with getting herself to sleep for her naps so I’ve stalled them a little.  I end up putting her in her crib around 11:30 and usually by 12 or 12:15, she is sleeping.  I’ve been getting her up at 1:40 or so because I’m afraid that much beyond that and she won’t be able to go to bed at night but I’m going to see if that’s necessary once the craze of the holidays is over.

A Runmarun tradition is to head to the Plaza in KC around Christmas and do some window shopping before going out to eat.  This year was no exception and we had a great time.

The plaza is a pretty festive place and we love all the lights and decorations.  I can’t believe that some day Lula will be walking around on her own when we go there, demanding to go in particular stores, etc.I know I haven’t been around much and once the holidays are over, I hope to be back here more frequently.  I won’t be posting over the holiday break as the family get-togethers begin, so from our family to yours, have a Merry Christmas!

Holiday Preparations

Good morning and HAPPY FRIDAY!  Unbelievable that it’s that time of week again and I am thrilled.

Lula and I have been busy little bees around here.  From decorating our Christmas tree. to holiday shopping, to baking up a storm; it’s been a busy start to December.

Lately, Lula and I have errands to run every day.  This gets somewhat interesting with her nap schedule being what it is but I am always willing to be flexible if it means she takes a nap.  This was her latest cart position when we were shopping a week or two ago.

I have had so much fun decorating the Christmas tree.  We picked it out last Saturday and by the time we set it up, we were exhausted and it was already (or only) 5 o’clock, depending on how you look at it.  We ended up putting the lights on after Lula went to bed that night and saving the ornaments for another day so we could eat dinner and watch one of the best Christmas movies ever- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!

Over the course of the last few days, I’ve been decorating it while Lula crawls around and plays.  I hung some soft, non-hazardous ornaments on the bottom of the tree so she could pull them off and play with them if she so desired.Surprisingly, she’s been fairly non-plussed about the fact that a tree with sparkly lights is now in our living room.  It might have something to do with the fact that she really dislikes the feel of the needles on her head…and who wouldn’t!

An ornament my mom sent to her last year…

One from Pa’s mom…

One of my favorite ornaments Pa got from his sister last year…

I think she bought it at Urban Outfitters?

And finally, the whole shebang!

My apologies for the poor lighting.  I love having it on in the morning before it gets too bright- it’s just so cheerful.

And finally, having nothing at all to do with Christmas preparations, Lula has gotten sweeter and more gentle with Frankie as of late…here’s the proof.

Have a fantastic weekend!!

Cyber Monday

This post has little to do with shopping, it’s just the catchy title the media dubbed today, so I thought I would use it.

Things are great around here. For the most part, Lula is sleeping like a champ- both overnight and during her naps.  Somehow, her sleep schedule seems to correlate to my happiness in life…I may need to work on that.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and sleeping until 7 every morning of Pa’s break from work was amazing.  We went to see family for Thanksgiving and had a great time.  Lula loved the attention and all of the Thanksgiving goodies!

Of course, all that sleep meant I was up at 4:30 this morning, but that’s okay.

We set up our outdoor Christmas decorations on Friday and I’ve started the holiday baking I do each year.

More on that later but in brief, I send tins of treats to many family members across the country and need to start early to ensure they get out to people on time.

What else have we been up to?

Lots of errand running lately; it seems like there is always something to do.

Additionally, the weather has been nice and on mild days, I really try to let Lula crawl around in the yard for awhile.

Running is still going well and I’m in the middle of another knitting project for the holidays.

I’m also in the middle of Gone Girl which has been an interesting read- not exactly a heart-warming book- but interesting nonetheless.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend (at least those of us in the US) and if you went shopping on Black Friday, you’re crazy.  Just kidding- we actually went to Wal-Mart on Friday afternoon for an extension cord and it wasn’t that bad- but you couldn’t pay me to wait in line with the masses.

I leave you with a twist on Movember.

Have a great week!

Fall Running Schedule

Well, here we are in the cooler weather I’ve been pining for since about mid-June.  And…I’m loving it!  I enjoy being a little chilly and remedying that with a warm blanket, the evenings becoming darker sooner, etc.

I especially love running in cooler temperatures.

I’m still running about the same mileage (19 miles) four times a week but I’m starting to run a little faster as I don’t have the heat to contend with.

Pa and I enjoy (that might be a tad sarcastic) two treadmill runs each week- Tuesdays and Thursdays- and my runs are four miles each, finished in about 34:30 if I can convince myself to do a little speedwork towards the end.

We run outdoors on Saturdays (6 miles) and Sundays (5 miles) and it’s a family affair.  Lula makes the trek with us and she seems to love it.  My only concern has been that lately, it’s been cold and windy, and finding a way to protect her face from the elements was causing this mama some worry.  I can dress her in a plush snowsuit but that doesn’t keep her face from getting a little cold and chapped.  She is too young to communicate to us how she’s feeling and additionally, doesn’t understand the concept of a scarf.

Enter, the BOB Weather Shield! We got this as a gift last Christmas and never used it because by the time she was ready for stroller running, spring had sprung.

We tried this guy out yesterday and it was amazing.  She had a nice little sauna (with plenty of breathability as there are great vents in this thing), and I had peace of mind during the run.

Kansas doesn’t get too terribly cold in the winter and shorts weather happens frequently- this picture was taken on Saturday!  (I know, it’s not technically winter yet but it’s getting close)  However, on windy, cold days, the weather shield is just the ticket.

Happy running!

Checking In

Good morning and happy Friday!

Pa has Monday off for Veteran’s Day and I was shocked to discover that the following week includes Thanksgiving!  Time is slipping away from me and I am trying to savor it as much as I possibly can.

We are all doing great- Lula and I have so much fun together.  She is a joy and I feel so lucky that I get to spend every day with her.  I frequently find myself singing “My Buddy” as we are pretty much attached at the hip.

It’s supposed to reach 75 degrees today and there is a big library book sale going on so we are going to venture that way post-nap.

This is Lula’s latest position when we are out shopping.  This time, her arm fell asleep and she freaked out.  She kept staring at her fist and clenching and unclenching it like she’d never seen it before.  Admittedly, it’s a weird sensation for anyone!

When Pa got her out of her crib the other morning, this was the way we found her.  Her hair was straight the night before so clearly she needs to teach me her tricks.  I left it like this all day long because it cracked me up so much.

She has been eating everything under the sun lately and Pa and I are on a big spinach smoothie kick- such a great way to start the day.  She has become a little beggar and always demands her share.  This was the result last weekend.

Yesterday was also a beautiful day so we made a point to get outdoors and play in the backyard.  There is no sign of Lula walking anytime soon (fine by me) but she does enjoy exploring her environment.

I hope your weekend is fabulous!

A great big thank you to all of the veterans out there who have served or are currently serving the United States of America.

Halloween Aftermath

Happy Thursday!

Phew, it’s been awhile since I wrote a post.  My parents were here visiting last week, Pa and I celebrated our birthdays, and of course, Halloween was on the horizon.  Additionally, I have been having so much fun with Lula that getting on the computer just hasn’t happened much at all.

I wanted to share a few shots from our Halloween celebration with you.  It was a very special day and I will always treasure it.  Next year, she will be walking, rather than having us hold her.  It’s going by so quickly.

Lula and I drove to Pa’s office in the afternoon as they have a trick-or-treat celebration there- most people participate and it’s pretty cool. Lula got a lot of attention and it was fun to see her ham it up after she got comfortable.

Then we all raced home to carve pumpkins and take some photos to capture the day.

These were this year’s pumpkins- I always make the same jack-o-lantern, Pa made Lula a special one (that was the only pumpkin we harvested this year), and he comes up with a different design every year.

It was a lot of fun to carve them while Lula crawled around on the floor.  I can’t even remember how I was able to carve a pumpkin last year as Lula was only one month old.

Onto the adorable costume- Lula was a duck!

We found her outfit browsing the online Carter’s store during a great sale a few weeks ago.  Originally $38, we got it for $11 plus shipping!  I went to the store to look at some and the sale prices there weren’t close to matching the online price so I was pleased we found such a good deal.  Additionally we had a gift card we had been hoarding, so that was also exciting.

It is so hard to get a decent still photo of Lula lately!

I love the tights and long-sleeved t…I can keep on using those with her which works really well.  I’m just sad that I can’t put this on her every day.

Lastly, a kind of creepy, over-exposed shot that I thought was fitting for Halloween.

All in all, life is great around here.  As today marks November 1st, my thoughts are beginning to drift to Thanksgiving and Christmas- my two favorite holidays of the year!  Is it too early to bust out the Christmas music?

Have a wonderful day!

Pumpkin Patching, Wisteria Pruning And Other Fall Activities

Good afternoon and happy Tuesday!

All is well around these parts, hope it is where you are too.

We are experiencing a mini heat wave around here with daytime temperatures soaring into the muggy 80s.  What happened to fall?  By Thursday afternoon, it’s supposed to be blustery so I’m keeping that little gem in my back pocket when I get annoyed with the weather.

I’m pretty sure that no one else in the blog world has been to the pumpkin patch this fall so I thought I would uniquely post my experience going there with Lula…just kidding!  There are lots of wonderful pumpkin patch blog posts out there written by like-minded mamas.  We had a great time although Lula was furious when I had to pick her up to stop her from sticking large pieces of pumpkin stems into her mouth.

One of the surprisingly fun memories from this past weekend was pruning back the wisteria on the side of our house.  We have it there to act as a buffer on hot summer days and are hopeful it has helped bring down our a/c bill in the last few years.

Wisteria gets out of control quickly so Pa decided that Sunday was the day to prune it back.

He worked on that while I let Lula explore the yard.

It was hard work for me, standing around doing nothing.

Lula had a great time crawling, crushing crunchy leaves with her hands, and surprisingly, not putting anything in her mouth!

Her hair has been a little wild lately which I kind of like.

The aftermath.

In other news, years ago, we put some of those biodegradeable SunChips bags in our compost bin to see if they would actually break down.  I’m happy to say that after years of observation, success!

Lula and I are enjoying our time together and I must say, after the first year, my days with her are flying by.  Too quickly, I’m afraid.

Have a fantastic day!
