The Ups and Downs of Postpartum Weight Loss

I gave birth to Lula in September of 2010 2011 (edited).  Those first few months were somewhat of a free for all.  I certainly wasn’t interested in “dieting” (survival was about all I was focused on) and I definitely had my share of sweets.

Between last winter and into spring, I saw my weight drop…slowly…and I was surprisingly okay with it not happening in a hurry.

Since the late summer, I have dropped quite a few pounds.  Shockingly, by the end of October, I weighed 12 pounds less than when I got pregnant with Lula in January of 2011.

Honestly, I haven’t been doing anything remarkably different than what I’ve been doing for the last few years. Eat healthy, run four days a week, etc.  Two differences?  I don’t sit the way I used to because I’m too busy doing stuff with Miss Lula (I am perfectly content to curl up on the couch for hours at a time reading and I’ve been known to finish a book in a day or two).

The other difference is that I do my best not to eat refined sugar (other than what I put in my morning coffee) until after dinner.  Last spring, I found myself eating a handful of chocolate chips after lunch, a few cookies here and there, etc.  I got tired of the unnecessary sugar in my body and I did not want Lula to see her main role model indulge that way.  I am not always perfect with this system but I do my best to stick to it.

Here I am in January of 2011!

sleep, nearly pregnant Kelly…sleep!

I apologize for the lack of a profile picture- I never took those before I got pregnant with Lula.

Fast-forward to Halloween 2012…

Lula was about to get into her costume, in case you were wondering.  Since I’ve lost this weight, I have been feeling great, I have so much energy, and Lula and I have been having a blast.

However, since early November, I’ve started feeling somewhat off, kind of tired, and I took this picture of myself a few days ago…same outfit, but…I look different.

Believe it or not, I haven’t gained more than a pound since the last photo was taken.  The difference between now and the end of October?

I’m actually three months pregnant!

Pa, Lula, and I are beyond excited and I hope to post more regularly now that the cat is out of the bag, and mainly because I am finally starting to feel better. Pregnancy update soon- have a great day!

    • Thanks Bobbie! Yes, I am definitely most excited about seeing her interact with her brother or sister. (It’s going to be a surprise). Hope you guys didn’t experience much bad weather on your travels to Kansas and back. We had to delay our trip to MN by a day because I-35 was closed near Ankeny…we made it safely the next day though, thank goodness. :) Happy New Year!

    • Hi Katie!!!! So good to hear from you! I was just thinking about you in the last few weeks- I hope you are doing well and that Audrey is well too! Thanks for stopping by and Happy New Year!

    • Thanks Heather! I have definitely been closely following your Twitter feed since you had Pumpkin and I really enjoyed your day in the life post from a few days ago. It gives me hope that I can do this! :)

    • Thanks, Joanna! Haha! Lessons? You will have to look to Heather for those, I’m afraid! If I survive the first three months, I will be lucky. :) Seriously, it’s going to be a trip, that’s for sure.

    • Awwww, thanks Brittany! I had fun trying to come up with an interesting way to announce it. I am definitely curious myself as to how it will be with two littles…looking forward to it!

  1. COngratulations!!! I bet you will find you will lose the baby weight quicker this time since you started out smaller. When I got pregnant with cassidy i was like 5 lbs heavier than my normal and thats exactly what my body returned to within 6 weeks of delivery. With Alyssa I also lost all the weight within 6 weeks but i started at my nomral, so i returned there easily. We’ve been thinking of trying for number 3 but i still nurse cassidy and my body doesnt ovulate until i quit nursing. I am just not ready to give it up yet!

    • Thanks, Lindsay! Losing the baby weight faster is definitely what I am hoping for. Especially since I will have a busy toddler to chase around the house this time, instead of sitting down and nursing for hours on end. I see a lot of baby wearing in my future! :) Ahhhhh! So exciting to be thinking about number three! And that is so cute that you aren’t ready to give up nursing yet! :)
