Happy Friday!

It’s Friday again- hooray!

Lula and I will be staying home today since Pa has a scheduled delivery coming- they gave him the time frame of 12-4 which sounds suspiciously like a cable guy.  :)   It is disgustingly hot here anyway, so we are just fine with chilling indoors.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Munchkin Meals with Lula

Welcome to RunMaRun or welcome back if you stopped by last Thursday!

I really enjoyed doing this last week and I’m glad Brittany is hosting- I know that Lula’s meals are far from exciting but it was so fun to oooooh and ahhhhh over what other mommas are feeding their little ones so for the sense of community, hopefully I can keep on contributing.

Since we don’t do as much real food within a given day and since no one needs to see 5 more photos of me with a baby’s head near my chest, I thought I would feature some of the items she’s enjoyed this week.

Avocados were on sale at the store so they have been featured in many of her lunches recently! I thought it would be cute to take a few shots of her gumming around with the avocado.  The only problem with this?

Ummm, she has teeth. And here’s the proof.I guess I forgot.

What I normally do is slice a decent size piece of avocado and break off chunks and let her chew on them.  I usually feed her the chunks myself.  Things like avocado and banana are so slippery that she can’t seem to do much with them if I hand them to her.

You might be thinking, well Kelly, why is Lula sitting in a Babysitter Balance instead of a high chair, where you could easily put little bits of food in front of her?

why am i eating in this thing?

Good question!

We do have a high chair- it was actually Pa’s high chair- which means it’s not up to regulation.

aesthetically pleasing? yes. practical? no.

We aren’t the kind of people who are too worried about that (although it begs the question- how did so many of us make it who were born in the very late 1970s; what with unsafe high chairs, drop-side cribs, and being put to sleep on our bellies) but it does need a strap to keep Miss Lula secure.  Pa and I hope to tackle that DIY project this weekend but until then, Lula is fed by Momma in a bouncy chair.

I’ve been doing more purees too, mainly because my garden produce is ramping up quickly and I don’t want it to spoil.  Purees are a great way to make a lot of something and freeze the extra.

These little guys make me smile.

We were given a Baby Bullet when Lula was born and I’ve been pretty impressed with it so far.

Other foods Lula has enjoyed this week include more sweet potato puree, zucchini puree (this stuff is so mild), and turnip puree.  Okay, I won’t say she’s enjoyed the turnip puree…I gave her a few spoons last week and she was willing to give it a try but it wasn’t her favorite.  This week not much has changed and since I don’t even like the taste of it, I think I will forego giving her more, at least for now!

really mom?

Once we gave up on turnip, sweet potato puree was next in line and she was very pleased with the change!

much better

Her one true love that has withstood the test of her short time spent outdoors, however, is grass.

shout out to my sis

She loves ripping out fistfuls of it and getting a little on her face.  In all seriousness, I don’t think she really gets any of it in her mouth and grass can keep her occupied for a looooong time.

Thanks again to Brittany for the genius idea that has created this community of mommas.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Our Garden Part VII

The problem with using Roman numerals in the titles of my posts is that I have to remember what they are…so far, so good!  Hopefully I don’t get past VIII this summer…

Seriously, the garden has become a jungle since the last update I posted.

this morning

One of the reasons it’s been awhile since I’ve updated the garden was due to our out-of-town adventure.  The other reason?  Some weeds that I was somewhat embarrassed by.

before

Fortunately, we got some much-needed rain last week and I was able to get busy with weeding.

after

Normally I keep Lula in the BOB when I am working in the garden but unless she is asleep or we are strolling, she gets frustrated quickly.  Pa suggested that I set her on a blanket with a few toys close to the garden gate and see how she fared.  The result?  Instead of a quick 15 minute venture with me scrambling to push a fussy baby indoors, I wrapped things up forty minutes later only because it was time for her nap!  I also made a mess of myself and oh yeah, my garden gloves are still sitting in the garden.Anyway… onto what’s been growing.

I’m sad to announce that most of the leafy greens have bolted. I finally admitted to myself that green leaf lettuce tastes bitter and that kale was my favorite of the leafies so more kale next year, no green leaf lettuce.

The zukes have been fantastic and I got a bumper crop this year- I shot these two with Lula after we got back from vacation and wowzers! Over the years, I have learned that when zukes get this big, they aren’t that great to cook with as their taste is somewhat diluted and the seeds are too big, so using them in quick breads is a good solution since the veggie flavor is not supposed to be prevalent.  I ended up using one monster for two batches of muffins and with the other I grated three freezer bags worth of zucchini for later use.

I also admitted to myself that I am not a fan of yellow squash.  Unless I cut them when they are extremely small, the seeds inside are out of control.  Next year, no more!  I should look for yellow zucchini instead.

Butternut squash are on their way, but I’ve seen the dreaded squash bugs (they give me the heebeejeebees, what is it with me and garden bugs?) lurking about so I suspect my butternuts might fall victim to them.  But I am still hopeful.

A larger shot of the squash part of the garden shows many yellowed areas which usually starts happening around now and then it all dies in a few weeks.Pumpkins have been overshadowed by the yellow squash but are holding their own by growing beyond the fence…The corn is taller than me- hopefully we pick it at the right time this year.

Peas?  A hot mess…some year I will have more success with them.

I already wrote about the broccoli

The turnips are thriving but honestly, I don’t like the taste! I even pureed some for Lula but when I tried it, I was not a fan…it’s like a very strong radish.  I’ve heard good things about roasting them but we are too cheap to keep our oven on for an hour at 400 degrees when it’s 100 degrees outside.

Tomatoes- holy moly these are giants. They thrive in the heat, that’s for sure.

I thought I was seeing things as it’s awfully early but…it’s a ripe roma!

Basil and cilantro are thriving! This is the earliest I remember seeing jalapenos this big!Purple bell peppersBell peppersAnd that’s a wrap!

At this point, I haven’t created any marvelous meals out of what we have harvested beyond lots of purees for Lula.

So far I’ve been eating a lot of zucchini and kale from our harvest.  I really enjoy sauteing zucchini in a skillet and then adding brown rice and some kind of protein- veggie patties, goat cheese, or tofu are my favorites.Lula and I plan on heading out to the garden and mercilessly ripping out the yellow squash plants to give the butternut squash and pumpkins more room to roam, although with the temps expected to be crazy hot, we’ll see how long either one of us lasts!

Have a great day!

How to get rid of broccoli caterpillars/worms organically

I really like planting broccoli in my garden.  It grows well here, it doesn’t take up too much space, I can usually harvest two rounds of it per plant, and it’s one of my (and Lula’s) favorite veggies.

The first year broccoli grew in my garden, I noticed holes showed up on the leaves of the broccoli plants. Putting two and two together, I surmised that something was munching on the broccoli leaves.

What exactly was that something?  Here’s an extremely poor quality photo taken a year or two ago to show my sister!

ewwww, caterpillars

Before gardening, I was never familiar with the green caterpillars/ worms lurking in the recesses of broccoli plants or more importantly, how to get rid of them.  I certainly did not want to spray a pesticide on the broccoli so I left the caterpillars alone until harvest time.

I found information online about how to get rid of these babies and thought it might be nice to do a tutorial with photographs (more caterpillar pictures below).

Once your crowns are full, cut them, break them, whatever you do before bringing them inside. Try to harvest them when they are ready, not when they have begun to turn a little yellow, meaning they are overripe? overdone?…which is what I did.

look at those holes the sun is shining through

I like to rinse the crowns thoroughly because let’s be real- there are all kinds of bugs, cobwebs, etc. on garden produce. Water alone (in my experience) doesn’t seem to get rid of these caterpillars.  What does?  Believe it or not, vinegar!  I cut my broccoli crowns into florets and place them in a large bowl with about a teaspoon or so of white vinegar, then I add enough water to fill the bowl completely.I let them soak for 15-20 minutes and slowly but surely these guys start to make an appearance.

impressive camouflage!

If you didn’t quite see it…

there he is!

I don’t like to touch these- I’m not a squeamish person about most things but for some reason these gross me out so a fork comes in handy!  Let’s look at one last shot…

got him

I’m shuddering as I type this.

Most years, I find about 10-20 of these in a few crowns of broccoli.  This year?  I found two in three decent size crowns.  I don’t know if that’s due to the heat coming a little earlier this year or if they were all hanging out somewhere else when I crashed the party.  Are these babies harmful?  I doubt it…and it got me thinking about if they might also be hiding in store-bought broccoli.

I better not even go there.

Ignorance is bliss, right?

Weekend In Review: 6.23 & 6.24

Happy Monday!

We hope everybody had a fantastic weekend. As usual, it went by waaay too fast but it was great.

Saturday morning included a really good 6 mile run with Lula followed by her complete refusal to take a morning nap.  I am convinced that she was cutting her other bottom tooth and was in too much pain to fall asleep, poor thing.

Before we headed out to meet family for lunch, we did a little harvesting in the garden and brought her outside to distract her.  I ended up tying an ice cube inside of one of her baby washcloths and I think that helped sooth her little gums.  Isn’t she a dead ringer for the Cullen family?  Pale skin, reddish lips and eyes?

Because of Lula’s rough start the rest of Saturday was…how shall I say this…challenging. We were hopeful that minimal napping would mean an easy bedtime and thankfully, it worked in our favor.

Dinner was enjoyed with a blockbuster hit- The Stepfather.  Actually, it never even made it to theaters, only to our local library, but it was still pretty fun.  The tagline on the DVD case read simply: “Daddy’s Home.”  Awesome.

No run on Sunday so we all slept until 6:45 and with a restful night for all of us, Sunday was a wonderful day.

Pa received a table saw as a gift when he graduated from law school and one of his weekend treats is working in the garage on Sundays. He is currently making something for Lula’s birthday – he won’t tell me what it is. I’ve got three months to figure it out.

I recently harvested broccoli from the garden (I owe you an update) and grated the stalk for homemade slaw. Word of warning? This stuff stinks! I grated it early in the week and I swear I smelled it every time I opened the fridge- it was in two sealed plastic bags but still.  The point of this story? I used fresh grated broccoli for Mama Pea’s Thai veggie burgers and they turned out really well! They seemed to bind a little better than they do when I use store-bought slaw, perhaps because of the extra moisture from the fresh broccoli slaw.

Lately when Lula and I are in the kitchen, I use my Kindle to play Pandora’s Disney station.  I don’t know if she gets anything out of it but I love hearing songs from my childhood. That said, I don’t really see why Pandora thinks that Barney, The White Stripes, or Whitney Houston would qualify as Disney songs.

Yesterday afternoon it got really hot here- so it was time to venture out into the pool!  Something beat us to it though.

Lula can't even look she is so grossed out...

Do you see all the black specks in the pool?  Drowned gnats.  Since I’ve been slow to hire a pool boy, Pa came up with the genius idea to strain them out.I have a bunch of these old flour/cheese cloths that I don’t really use so one of these was perfect to skim the bugs off the top of the water!

Pa and Lula ventured in and they had a blast!  Lula tried, many times, to catch the water but with no success. We were out there around 6 PM and the color was so rich.  I love this photo of sun and shade. Our plans for the week include some shopping trips and hopefully a lunch date with our favorite guy.  We hope that you all have a fantastic week!

Munchkin Meals through IPhone

Hi, I’m Kelly and this is my baby Lula!Brittany over at A Healthy Slice Of Life is hosting something called Munchkin Meals.  Basically, she came up with a great idea for mommas to share what they feed their little ones.  I’m afraid my post won’t be too interesting or creative but I am looking forward to seeing what other mommas are doing!

Lula is almost nine months old and at this point, I am doing a nursing/baby led weaning/purees/every day is different/ kind of meal plan with her.

Here’s what yesterday looked like.

I nurse Lula several times a day- at 5:15 AM I nursed her, repeated at 7:15, 8:30, 11…you get the idea.  Things become really exciting around lunch time when she is fed real food! ;) She loves chewing on a Propel bottle while I get our lunch ready.

Tuesday I gave her some broccoli puree and, well…she was not a fan.  I wasn’t incredibly smart about it as I gave her a little sweet potato puree first so on the heels of that deliciousness, who would want broccoli puree?

Wednesday, I think I won her over!

so far so good...

being thoroughly inspected

I...don't mind it!

I had a few grapes I was eating so I picked apart some of the insides for her dessert- she loves fruit! The afternoon consisted of nursings roughly every two hours which last all of 5-10 minutes because she is so darn efficient!

Evening brings cereal- iron fortified- and we rotate between rice and oatmeal.  Lula’s favorite is definitely oatmeal!

I nurse her again at 6:45 for a pre-bedtime snack and at 9:30 I “dream feed” her before I go to bed.

I really enjoy introducing new foods to her but I am definitely taking my time with it- most of her nutrients still come from nursing.

Thanks for hosting this Brittany- I’m looking forward to seeing what other mommas are feeding their little ones!

Nap Time and Nighttime- Lessons Learned

It’s been a few weeks now that I’ve been trying something new with Miss Lula’s sleep schedule.  This is actually the fifth post I have written regarding Lula’s sleep habits.  I am excited to announce that I think that she and I (with some help and encouragement) have figured out what works best for us…for the time being.  :)   I’ve got to say that both of us are much happier.

So…here’s what we are doing currently.  Lula gets up around 6:45 AM (see here for a typical day this month) and as 8:30 approaches, I start watching her closely.  She often gives me cues to let me know that she is tired.  Eye rubbing is the most obvious one but she also pulls her ears and touches her head excessively.

Once I see those gestures, I know my time is limited.  I usually have her diaper changed before 8:30 so I can quickly bring her back to the nursery.  From there, I nurse her one last time.  If she is really tired, she drifts off before I put her in the crib.  Most of the time, she delatches when she is done nursing and I rock her for a minute, sing her a song, and put her in her crib with her seahorse playing. She loves this thing and I think it’s a comfort for her to have it in the crib with her.

Some mornings I shut her door and I never hear a peep from her.  Other mornings she will babble and play before drifting off to sleep.  Other mornings she cries and I need to go back in and check on her once or twice.  I have become much more patient about accepting the mood that she is in and helping her if she needs me to.

Then, a big change for me, I let her sleep until she wakes up and as many of the books I have looked at state, she should be happy at the end of nap time. Optimally, I like to hear her playing in her crib after her nap, hence waking herself up, but sometimes I need to get her up if she has been sleeping a loooong time or we have somewhere to go.  Typically her morning nap is now two hours long and I can’t express how much it has changed our days!  Sometimes I feel like I am “cheating” because our day together has been so easy!  (If you’ve been reading for awhile, I used to wake her from her morning nap after an hour and ten minutes.)  Clearly that wasn’t enough sleep for her.

I repeat the same process in the afternoon- around 2:30 I start watching her closely until I see similar cues signaling fatigue and then we do a repeat of our morning nap time routine.  Her afternoon nap tends to be shorter (unless she had a short morning nap) which is just fine.  I never let her sleep past 4 as her bedtime is 7 and she seems to need about three hours of awake time to be ready to go to bed for realz.

Nighttime has gotten so much better.  It’s now clear to me how very overtired Lula was most evenings as we would try to keep her up until 6:45 after minimal napping and it was certainly understandable that she had a tough time getting herself to sleep when she was exhausted.  I could beat myself up about not recognizing this earlier but quoting Maya Angelou, “when you know better, you do better.”

Just like her naps, some evenings there is nary a peep from her after I shut her door, other evenings she babbles and plays, and other evenings she requires some extra TLC which often consists of a visit or two from me or Pa.  The good news is that the extra TLC nights are becoming less and less frequent and I am finding that nighttime is a much less stressful time for our family.

A month ago, Lula was sleeping for less than two hours during the day and she struggled to get to bed most nights.  She now takes close to three hours of naps and nighttime is usually a breeze.  Other changes I have noticed that I believe are in direct correlation to her new nap time routine include less neediness, more independent playing, and overall, a happier baby.

I am grateful to Lindsay for explaining her baby’s sleep routine (still jealous of those long naps!), Brittany for the encouragement on Twitter and for posting her baby’s day-to-day routine, Ashley for her post about her success with her daughter’s need for extra sleep, and before Lula was born, Heather wrote a very good post about reflections on her time early on with her baby.

I truly love the blog community- it’s wonderful that so many people are willing to share their accomplishments and struggles with others and believe me, the information I have picked up has helped me in many ways!

Have a great day!

Lula’s first 10K!

I am pleased to say that Pa and I finally found a family friendly 10K that was reasonably priced!  It was scheduled on the same morning we were leaving for our road trip.  Even without a race, getting everything ready when we are heading out of town is a mad dash, tends to be stressful, and always takes us longer than we planned.  So why wouldn’t we decide to take 2+ hours away from packing to run a race?

Fortunately, because I am home and because Pa and I are both planners, we actually had quite a bit of our packing completed by Friday night but we still weren’t necessarily ready to run a race come 6 AM Saturday morning.

I nursed Lula when I got up (one side) and put her back in her crib to see if she would fall asleep for a little while.  She just played in her crib while Pa and I woke up- me with coffee and him with Propel.  When it was close to our departure time (the race started at 7:30), Lula got her diaper changed and I nursed her again on the other side- she was nice and full and I was nice and empty! :)

This is a small run to help the local library in our area and we’ve run it plenty of times.  It was special, of course, because Lula was with us!

getting ready

I used to get pre-race jitters.  Most of them were because I was racing for time…nowadays, I am just happy to get out there and push myself a little bit.  I’m not in racing shape and I didn’t want to die out there (or throw up) so I was fairly relaxed.

Pa and I got our shirts, race number bibs, and did some serious people watching while we waited.

As an aside, I keep finding random bruises on my unbelievably pale legs so I hope you enjoy the view!  :)

Pa started the race with the stroller and lucky me, he ended up pushing it the entire way.  We started the race in the back of the pack and soon discovered we should have started further up so we wouldn’t have to dodge people with a stroller!

After about a mile of running together, Pa and Lula broke away from me (we usually race individually) and I kept them in my sights as motivation to keep pushing.

This race is a 5K & 10K out and back and most people opt to run the 5K.  It can be mentally challenging to see so many people turn around after 1.5 miles and know that you’ve got a ways to go.  Since I was considering this to be just another 6 mile run rather than a race, this year it wasn’t so bad when so many made their way to the finish line.

Once I passed the 5K turnaround, I knew I was working hard.  I picked off one woman right before the 10K turnaround and then another one immediately afterwards.  At that point, I was the lead woman for the 10K- I am not a super fast runner but I was still excited.

With about two and a half miles left, Pa turned around (he is so sweet!) and ran the rest of the race with me.  I wouldn’t have minded if he had gone ahead but he was slowed down with the stroller and didn’t have a chance of placing in the top three finishers.

There were a fair number of hills and it was getting warmer as the sun rose higher in the sky but we kept on pushing.  One of the women I picked off got ahead of me and eventually the other one did too but I got ahead of her a little later on and never saw her again.

A few more people passed us, including one more woman, and I knew that it might be difficult to finish in the top 3 females.  Excitingly, I was able to keep my position so that was pretty cool!  We ended up finishing the race in 52:29!  I ran this race in 2010 and my finishing time was 55:31 so I was pretty pleased with my time.  I was running 8:36 minute miles which is about my average speed on my treadmill runs so hooray for speedwork paying off!

As an aside, I am not trying to take anything away from any of the women who ran this 10K, myself included, but I recognize that my time is not that impressive.  This is a family run, not a run for PRs.  I am pleased that I did well for me, but to claim that I ran a fast race, I would have had to be under 8 minute miles for sure, if not under 7 minute miles!  :)

sweaty glow

We ended up sticking around so I could get my medal!I definitely wanted Lula up there with me and I’m glad Pa got a photograph! All in all, it was a really good race and I’m so glad that Pa and I decided to make it happen, even on a hectic morning.  We basked in the post-race glow for most of the day and I am motivated to start looking for more family friendly races this summer.

Have a great day!

p.s. Lula did great for the entire race- she took it all in stride and even snoozed for a few minutes towards the end- I am so grateful my baby likes being in a stroller!

Travelling with a baby

Hello and happy Monday!  Well, we survived our big trip!  :)

up and at 'em

Thanks again for your advice on travelling with Lula.  I think Blackhuff was exactly right- the driving was the least of our concerns!  We hit the road late on Saturday morning after running a 10K! (more on that later).  Lula snoozed for part of the race (she was in the stroller) but beyond that, she hadn’t had her morning nap and we took off at 11:30- yikes.  She was out before we left our subdivision!

She slept for an hour or so and then happily played with a few toys for forty-five minutes before we needed to stop for a potty/lunch break.

We hoped to find a nice rest area to stop at for lunch but we ran into some that were closed so after fueling up the car, we ended up driving around a small town until we found a shady, grassy spot behind a hotel.  Lula sat on a blanket and played with grass and Pa and I were able to eat lunch and stretch our legs. We stopped for about 45 minutes, much like Lindsay suggested, and it worked really well.  I nursed Lula right before we began driving again.

She whined for about 15 minutes and then conked out for about two hours which was just what she needed after an early start to the day.  I drove and Pa and I had some great conversation. We stopped with about 30 minutes left of the drive to use the restroom and wake Lula up and arrived at my MIL’s house by 5:30.

Overall, the drive was wonderful and I would imagine in many ways, a lot easier with a baby who takes long naps rather than a toddler who wants to be running around and exploring.

I found that the hard part about travelling in this instance was acclimating Lula to people she hadn’t seen for a few months, a new environment, and a new place to sleep!  We had a fantastic time and Pa’s mom and sister helped out as much as they could but a baby who doesn’t want to take a nap or go to bed at night and screams instead of sleeps is still not fun to deal with.

a lighter moment

There were definitely some stressful moments for this mama. It got to the point where I was dreading nighttime because of Lula’s erratic sleep schedule and I know it didn’t help that she was sleeping in the same room with us.

One evening she woke up at 9:30 when Pa and I came in her room to go to sleep and she was up until 1:30…we actually left the room at 10 and slept in the living room but she just kept on crying.  I tried to nurse her, I tried to rock her to sleep, Pa actually drove her around town for 45 minutes…nothing doing!  I was at my wit’s end and I had to just put her down and let her cry.  Fortunately, no one heard her except for me and Pa so that helped a lot.  Needless to say, for a large portion of our trip Lula was very overtired and only wanted Mommy. She is also cutting both of her front teeth so perhaps that was part of the issue.

For our own sanity, Pa and I decided that we would take drastic measures the next night which included running an air purifier to block out sound (the walls of the living room are shared with the room she was sleeping in), hanging blankets to darken the room, and me and Pa sleeping in the living room again.

That evening, she and I went in her room at 7, I changed her diaper and nursed her.  In about 10 minutes, she passed out.  I tiptoed out of there and didn’t hear from her again until I went to nurse her the following morning at 6:50.  Having a good night’s sleep was amazing- for all of us!

Of course, beyond spending time together, the purpose of the trip was to paint my MIL’s house! My sister-in-law and I took turns watching Lula so I could do some painting and I found it to be a nice respite- it was surprisingly therapeutic!Thank goodness we brought our stroller with us- some days that was the only way Lula took a nap!The drive home was pretty similar to the drive to my MIL’s house- she napped for a huge portion of it, we had a relaxing lunch at a real rest stop this time, and I was so very happy to get back to our house, her crib, and our own routine.  Many thanks to Bobbie for the recommendation to wrap a blanket around the pack and play mattress- I think that helped her!

Pa and I used to make this drive a few times a year and it always felt long.  Having Lula along and taking breaks actually made the drive feel shorter- it’s becoming more about the journey in addition to the destination.

We made some great memories and I’m so glad we took the plunge and travelled with Miss Lula- beyond her sleeping habits, it really was a fantastic trip!

Have a great week!

Running Update

It seems like I should be writing more running posts, considering the name of my website.  It just seems boring and repetitive to discuss my running when it tends to be the same every week.

At some point, I will take some time to write about my running history but in brief, Pa and I started running together about 10 years ago.

Initially, running races was something that helped motivate us to continue running regularly and we started with 5Ks (thought I was going to puke after my first one!), ran a few 5 milers (those are hard to find), made the leap to a half-marathon, and ran our first and only marathon (so far) in 2004.

Since then, we’ve done a number of half-marathons, 5Ks, and 10Ks but since I got pregnant, we haven’t raced at all.

There are a lot of reasons for the lack of races including the fact that now we run because we are addicted to it- we no longer need races to motivate us to run regularly.  My best days are ALWAYS the days that I run.  I know the importance of taking rest days though- I take three a week- but I always feel refreshed and more balanced after a run.

It’s also more challenging to race now that we have Lula.  Some races allow strollers, others do not.

A few weekends ago, there was a 10K that we were toying with signing up for but then we saw the price…for Pa and I to run this race, it would have set us back eighty bucks!  A year or two ago, we probably would have grumbled a bit and paid the exorbitant fee anyway but now, money is pretty tight and I have a tough time justifying spending that much when we can go out on our own and run for free!

Anyway, that brings me to my current running schedule- brace yourself, this is really exciting.  :)

During the week, Pa and I run on our own.  This winter, we both ran on the treadmill- not together- just one after the other.  ;)   Since it’s now much lighter in the mornings, he runs outside before heading to work.  That enables me to do a little more distance on the treadmill.

This has been my routine for the past few weeks.

Monday- up at 5:15, nurse Lula, down on the treadmill by 5:40, a two minute warm-up (first minute at 3 mph, second minute at 4 mph) then I start my run at 7 mph and stay there until the last five minutes or so when I increase my speed a tenth of a mile per hour a minute at a time.  My final time:Wednesday- repeat of Monday’s schedule other than distance.  My final time: Friday- repeat of Monday and Wednesday’s schedule other than distance.  My final time:

a little slower

Side note: I don’t believe for one second that I am burning that many calories!!

Saturday- up at 5:45, nurse Lula, Pa and I slowly wake up, I get Lula from her crib around 6:15 to nurse her again, and we are dressed and out the door with the stroller by 6:30.  Final time: 6 miles in 55 minutes (roughly)!I am pretty happy with the running I am currently doing.  When I started running again post-pregnancy, my speed on the treadmill was something like 5.4 MPH.

Seven months later, it feels good to ramp back up to what I was doing pre-pregnancy and frankly, I don’t think I would be running at 7.0 MPH without the treadmill to force me to maintain that speed.  (I’m trying to remind myself that there are positives of treadmill running).

I may try to ramp up my mileage on the treadmill but I’ve got to say, running five miles on a treadmill, especially when it’s 75 degrees in our basement, is fairly torturous.  If I can do it once a week, I’d say that is pretty good!
