Well, this post is a little overdue! I am really starting to see progress in the garden and it’s very exciting. Good news- no Diggory Delvet sighting since last week so I think our garden is safe for the moment!
Everything seems just a little bit taller and bushier this week! You can see we put cages on the tomatoes and peppers- we learned that it’s never too early. Although they look ridiculous now, in a month or two, they will be taller than the cages!
We have some lovely basil beginning to produce nice shiny leaves,
our cilantro is growing outward and upward,
the broccoli is so close to producing florets and caterpillars have invaded the leaves,
the turnips need to be thinned again,
the peas are beginning to shoot out their tendrils (the pack we bought claims there is no need to put a fence between plants),
the corn (second time around) is a success,
kale chips are on the menu soon,
the romaine looks so pretty,
the green leaf lettuce is ready to be plucked,
the spinach looks fantastic,
the onions are taller,
the pumpkins (second time planted) have pushed their way out of the earth and Pa thinned a few of the ones you see here,
both the zucchini and yellow squash are doing extremely well,
and you can see the fruit of our labor below!
It seems that some veggies are early this year. It has been a warmer spring and I have been home to observe the garden every day as opposed to checking it out when I remember to (sometimes once a week when I was working out of the house) so I’m sure both of those have played a role.
I need to work on weeding- I tried this morning but Lula wanted nothing to do with it and I admit, I became frustrated. Only when I really have my heart set on doing something and she is unwilling to cooperate do I get upset- this morning was one of those times.
Onward and upward! Have a great day!

Oh WOW!! Your garden is looking so good! Please remind me that I really want one next year so I set it up in time to plant all these goodies!
That is a deal!
Oh my gosh your garden is doing AMAZING! Mine never turns out that well. Is it organic or do you use fertilizers in the soil? I always try to do it organically (with chicken poop as fertilizer) but it never looks like yours! My mom uses fertilizer but no spray on the actual veggies so its still better than conventional veggies and hers grow SO well. And is that hay on top to keep the weeds down?
We use something called cotton burr compost which is tilled into the soil- about 5 BIG bags of it…in years past we used Miracle Gro but after I got pregnant we decided to skip doing that. It looks like hay but it’s actually just grass clippings from the yard we bag up while we mow and then sprinkle over everything to keep the weeds down. It seems to work fairly well but some areas just get overgrown every year…I am trying to get out there more!
